Recent advances in product technology and biological research have made natural landscaping the preferred and responsible method of maintaining commercial properties. Chemical pesticides are made from petroleum; they contaminate drinking water supplies, destroy wildlife habitat and are linked to serious human health problems, especially for pregnant women and children.
Naturally-maintained turf develops deep root systems, increasing drought resistance and reducing the need for water. Turf cut at three inches height instead of the traditional "corporate crew cut" of 1.75 inches, produces lush, healthy, vigorous plants that outcompete most weeds. A healthy and balanced soil profile helps mitigate most pest problems.
There are many new organic lawn products on the market to help landscapers maintain beautiful turf without chemicals. Organic fertilizers, soil amendments with micronutrients including rock dust, kelp and other marine sources, corn gluten for pre-emergent weed control, and compost tea are some of the newest tools available.
