There has been a trend in recent years to install carpeting in classrooms, libraries and auditoriums for aesthetic and noise-control purposes, but it presents real challenges to a "green school" building program.

Most institutional carpeting is made from non-renewable petrochemicals with high VOC (volatile organic compound) levels, that volatilize (or "outgas") for weeks or months after installation. Some of these chemicals can be very toxic to children and pregnant women, and inhalation is the primary route of exposure.

In addition, carpeting is usually applied with glues or adhesives that frequently contain high VOC levels. Exposure to these chemicals can exacerbate asthmatic conditions.

Carpeting also complicates the cleaning process because dirt, dust and food can become lodged in carpeting fibers where they are difficult to remove. Pesticides tracked in from outdoors can also become imbedded in carpeting, where, without the normal breakdown forces of sunlight and water, they can remain active for months or years, putting children at risk. And finally, carpet cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals, residues from which can remain in the carpeting for long periods of time.
