The two-cycle engines which power much of the landscaping equipment in use today are noisy, inefficient, and contribute significantly to air pollution. According to the EPA, emissions from mowers, blowers and trimmers are often much greater than those from a car, per hour of operation. Some manufacturers have switched to four-cycle engines which are much quieter and release fewer toxins into the air. Others have turned to electric motors, which are quiet, efficient, and release almost no pollutants. Fuel suppliers are beginning to offer biofuels for professional landscaping equipment, but care must be taken for best results (see below). Resources: The Pacific Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center (PPRC), a non-profit organization, is the Northwest’s leading source of high quality, unbiased pollution prevention information. They have a fascinating report on Biodiesel Powered Landscaping Equipment on their website, along with ideas and comments by many professionals in the field. | GREEN LINKS Black & Decker - 18 volt cordless rechargeable outdoor products get yard work done without emitting gas emissions into the air and environment.
